With this Van Dale Dutch Explanatory Pocket Dictionary, you can do a quick search on what a word means, how to write it or how to use it. This dictionary contains 30,037 headwords, selected according to usage frequency. With to-the-point definitions and practical examples of usage, it is especially suited for use in school and on holidays. Van Dale dictionaries are aimed at Dutch spoken users.

Get the most out of this Van Dale Pocket dictionary by using the clever functionalities:

• Type, paste, write or dictate (from iOS 8.2) your word: all entry methods are available to you. We will continue the search when you tap on a word in an entry.
• Use the Word Trainer for learning a language. Select words from the dictionary to test yourself.
• A language not only written, but also spoken. The pronunciation of Dutch words is written in phonotype.
• While you are typing words, the best matches are already shown. This way, you often don’t need to type an entire word.
• Turn the dictionary inside out: do a full-text search to find words and examples in entries as well.
• Uncertain about how a word is written? Typing wrongly spelled words is not a problem. We will also find words that are similar to the one you have typed.
• Fill in a form of a word and we’ll show you the stem of that word. You will also find practical schedules with word forms in the descriptions of words.
• Use wildcards instead of letters or search for anagrams. This way, you can search with even more results and you have a useful aid for puzzles and word games.
• Do a search on one or more words directly from Safari or from your clipboard (from iOS 8).
• Your search history is saved (and can be deleted easily!)
• Adjust the font size or colours according to your own taste and use pinch to zoom within articles.
• Would you like to keep your find? Simply put words in your own favourites list.
• An internet connection is not required to use this app, so no hidden costs.
• Van Dale apps are universal, so they work on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. You can use them in portrait or landscape position.

We regularly perform technical updates. This way, bugs are eliminated and new possibilities are added. Do you have suggestions or do you have ideas to improve this app? Latest reviews of Dutch Dictionary - Van Dale Pocket dictionary: define, spell and use Dutch words correctly app for iPhone and iPad

Just a complete list of words
Compared to the CD-ROM version of Van Dales Nederlands Woordenboek, this version is very basic. Just the words with their meanings, but no extras like etymology, or search options with wildcards etc. The price is about right for what this app offers, but an advanced or enhanced version would be very welcome.
OK; needs some work
The content of the dictionary, from Van Dale, is sufficient, accurate and useful. However, Paragons dictionary engine that is at the core of this app (and the same engine used in their dozens of dictionary apps) leaves a lot to be desired. While Im glad they made it work with iOS 5, the app is STILL not multitasking enabled, so if you exit the app and return to it, you have to start over again. I use my iPad for studying Dutch; having to search for the same word over and over again as I move around is ridiculous. Cut and paste is disabled, presumably to prevent wholesale copying of the dictionary content. But for someone studying the language, an inability to copy even a properly-spelled word or basic things like parts of speech from the dictionary and paste it into my notes is a major inconvenience. As iOS apps go, the visual design and overall interface is hardly what Id call state-of-the-art. Finally, at $12.00, I think this app is a bit of a rip-off. Paragon seems to know it has no competition, and it prices the dictionary accordingly. The print version of the Van Dale Pocketwoordboek is €9,95 from most retailers; roughly US$13.00 (in September 2011). So Paragon is marking down the digital version by a whopping US$1.00. Considering that no trees were destroyed in the making of this app, so to speak, one might think the pricing would reflect that. Alas, it doesnt. But as the only conventional Dutch dictionary available in the US iTunes store, theres little to do but put-up, and shut-up.
